(Boston, MA – December 3, 2024) Yesterday, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Roxbury Community College (RCC) hosted a community conversation to discuss Dana Farber’s transformative proposal to expand patient access and leading-edge cost-effective cancer care by building a new dedicated adult inpatient cancer hospital in the Longwood Medical Area.
The event, hosted by RCC and attended by dozens of community members, included representatives of the Dana-Farber leadership team who provided an overview of the project and answered questions from attendees.
“For more than 75 years, Dana-Farber has proudly been part of this community providing expert, compassionate cancer care to patients and their families,” said Magnolia Contreras, Vice President of Community Health at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “As a committed, strong partner with all the communities we serve, we are working with them as we grow and assure the best future of cancer care for all. Our proposed new hospital is the right approach for Boston, our region, and our state as it strengthens the care and support that we provide our patients – while also expanding access and equity so that we can help even more patients who need care.”
“In partnering with Dana-Farber, our goal at Roxbury Community College is to create a healthcare ecosystem where we can train and deliver a local workforce of nurses, phlebotomists, medical billers, medical assistance, x-ray technicians and more,” said Jonathan K. Jefferson, President of Roxbury Community College. “We look forward to working with Dana-Farber to improve health and well-being for our local community. We especially look forward to seeing our students, alumni, and local workforce seize the opportunities that this new cancer hospital brings about. Their success is our success.”
Dana-Farber and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center first announced plans for a new collaboration in September 2023, designed to transform the future patient experience by providing better health outcomes, more cost-effective care, and expanded access and equity. The announcement included a new hospital that will be owned and operated by Dana-Farber.
With cancer incidences rising at alarming rates in Massachusetts and across the country, Dana-Farber’s new cancer-only hospital will help improve health outcomes for patients, increase access with a proposed 300 additional beds in the facility, lower costs, and advance equity.
