BOSTON – April 29, 2026 – PRESS RELEASE – Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell issued the following statement ahead of today’s arguments in the Supreme Court of the United States on the Department of Homeland Security’s unlawful termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and Syria:
“TPS holders are vital to Massachusetts communities and our workforce, especially in our health care and elder care industries,” said AG Campbell. “I urge the Supreme Court to uphold TPS designations for Haiti and Syria and reject the Trump Administration’s attempts to separate families and send our residents back into dangerous conditions. My office will continue to use every legal tool available to protect our immigrant communities and challenge unlawful actions brought by the federal administration.”
BACKGROUND
- Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, AG Campbell has filed numerous amicus briefs in multiple cases in support of maintaining TPS protections for Haitians, Syrians, and other immigrant groups.
- In the specific cases before the Supreme Court (Trump v. Miot and Mullin v. Doe), AG Campbell has asked the courts on multiple occasions to maintain TPS protections for Haitians and Syrians.
- On September 3, 2025, AG Campbell co-led a coalition of 18 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia, supporting a challenge to the Trump Administration’s unlawful attempt to terminate Haiti’s TPS designation.
- On February 2, 2026, AG Campbell celebrated a court’s decision in to pause the Trump Administration’s decision to end Haiti’s TPS designation, which was set to expire the next day.
- On February 17, 2026, AG Campbell co-led a coalition of 18 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, opposing the Trump Administration’s effort to overturn the lower court’s decision to postpone the termination of Haiti’s TPS designation while litigation on the termination continued.
- On March 16, 2026, AG Campbell co-led a coalition of 19 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in the Supreme Court of the United States—on the emergency docket—opposing the Trump Administration’s effort to overturn the lower court’s decision to preserve TPS protections for certain Haitian nationals while litigation on the termination of Haitian TPS continued.
- On April 13, 2026, AG Campbell co-led a coalition of 19 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in in the Supreme Court of the United States asking the Court to affirm the lower court orders temporarily blocking termination of TPS for Haiti and Syria.
