The “Core Group” takes note of the presentation of the electoral calendar and urges the actors to respect this calendar in order to allow the population to elect their representatives.

Port-au-Prince, June 6, 2016 – The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the other members of the “Core Group” (the Ambassadors of Brazil, Canada, Spain, France, United States America, the European Union, and the Special Representative of the Organization of American States) take note of the presentation of the electoral calendar by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) following its consideration of the report of the Independent Commission for Electoral Evaluation and Verification.

The “Core Group” remains deeply concerned about the decision to resume the presidential elections, which will have financial consequences and lengthen the electoral process which began in 2015. The “Core Group” reiterates that it is incumbent on a democratically elected government to raise the issues. growing socio-economic and humanitarian challenges facing Haiti.

Stressing again that Haiti urgently needs to have elected representatives at all levels, the “Core Group” urges all Haitian actors to scrupulously respect this electoral calendar in order to organize transparent and fair elections in an impartial manner , allowing Haitians to elect the President of the Republic, parliamentary representatives as well as municipal and local authorities, as provided for by the Haitian Constitution.

To this end, the “Core Group” calls on all the Haitian authorities responsible for the organization of the elections, in particular the CEP and the government, as well as the political and socio-economic actors, to work for the completion of the electoral process started in 2015, within the announced deadlines and terms.
