Andrea Campbell’s Campaign Gains Momentum — Earning the First Endorsement from Boston Elected Official, Support from Community Leaders and Breaking Fundraising Records

BOSTON – Just over a week into the new year, Andrea Campbell’s campaign has already surpassed its best fundraising month to date, doubled its campaign signups, and today announced the first endorsement from a Boston elected leader in the mayoral election and support from prominent local Boston leaders in her bid for mayor.
In less than two weeks, Campbell has raised over $160,000, already surpassing her best fundraising month to date. This brings her total amount raised for her campaign over $467,000 since announcing, more than any Black candidate has ever raised total for a mayoral campaign in Boston.

Despite being a district councilor, Campbell already has strong support from leaders across the city of Boston, including former Secretary of Public Safety Andrea Cabral, who endorsed Campbell in December. Today, she announced endorsements from several local, elected, and community leaders from Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, East Boston, and Hyde Park:

Liz Malia, State Representative for the 11th Suffolk District, including parts of Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Roslindale, and Dorchester

former President & CEO of the South End Community Health Center, founder of the Codman Square Health Center, and former Boston mayoral candidate

Diana Hwang, Founder of the Asian American Women’s Political Initiative, former political director at She The People, and former State Senate candidate for the 1st Suffolk and Middlesex District

Dr. Atyia Martin, founder and CEO of All Aces, Inc. and former Chief Resilience Officer of the City of Boston

John Borders IV, Dorchester community activist and faith leader

Makeeba McCreary, a leader in education, racial equity, and philanthropy and former Chief of Staff at Boston Public Schools

“Over the last few years, I’ve seen Andrea demonstrate leadership that is courageous, community-driven, and capable of delivering – not just for her own constituents but for all residents of Boston,” said Representative Malia. “I am proud to support her as our next mayor of Boston.”

“In more than 40 years working in health care, education and community development, I have rarely seen the extraordinary leadership, energy and intelligence that Andrea Campbell exercises on a daily basis,” said Walczak. “I volunteered to help Andrea in her first run for city council after hearing her identify the challenges facing Dorchester and Mattapan, and how she would address them. Andrea has an analytical mind, a vision for achieving progress and equity, and a proven track record. Andrea will provide the bold leadership needed for Boston to realize its full potential as a city leading the nation in equity and innovation, by ensuring that every resident, of every age and background, has access to outstanding schools, jobs, health and opportunity. I am proud to endorse Andrea Campbell for Mayor of Boston.”

“Andrea is a rare, authentic leader whose lived experience and deep sense of justice guide her every single day. As we continue to battle the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism in our City, this moment requires a leader who understands the inequities in our communities at her core and who can bring people together across race, ethnicity, and across our neighborhoods to make real change – Andrea is that leader,” said Hwang.

“Andrea Campbell is a smart, capable leader and a champion for racial equity, who understands that for Boston to be a resilient city, all people must have access to what they need to thrive,” said Martin. “As an individual, as a community member, and as a professional in resiliency strategy and racial equity work, I believe in Andrea’s ability to bring our communities together to fight for and deliver equity in Boston.”

“Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside Andrea. Andrea Campbell is a leader with a heart for service and a vision for our City,” said Borders. “Andrea is practical, pragmatic, and prepared to lead us through this turbulent time we face. I’m excited to support her work as she fights to make Boston better for us all.”

“Andrea’s leadership is wrapped in the kind of integrity, fierce perseverance and drive for equity and access that is necessary to stand strong when the work is hard,” said McCreary. “This city deserves all of those qualities in its next Mayor and Andrea Campbell isn’t afraid to push forward until we are the best possible city we can be.”

“In the past few days, I have been so humbled by the outpouring of support and enthusiasm for this campaign. The momentum we are seeing by every measure is a clear sign that our vision is resonating with residents across this city,” said Councilor Campbell. “I am grateful to have the support of these incredible Boston leaders who have championed equity and justice in education, in public health, and in their communities. I am looking forward to building a winning campaign and a more equitable Boston in partnership with them.”
