The provisional suspension of the carrying of a firearm lifted.

In a press release made public on Wednesday, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security informs that, following a meeting of the Superior Council of the National Police (CSPN), held on June 15, 2016, it was decided to lift the measure of provisional suspension of the carrying of firearms throughout the national territory.

“However, the police remain on maximum alert to guarantee and ensure the safety of the population in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the Republic” underlines this press release which bears the signature of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Me Camille Édouard Jr.

On the other hand, “the Ministry of Justice and Public Security invites the population to collaborate with the police authorities to seek out and punish all the perpetrators and accomplices of acts of banditry likely to disturb the public peace.”

The Ministry asks the population to keep their calm and serenity and to continue to trust the Haitian national police, which will not fail to respond to its mission, in all circumstances.

The measure of provisional suspension of the carrying of a firearm throughout the national territory had been variously interpreted at the level of several layers of Haitian society. For some this measure was inappropriate because it gave free rein to the bandits to carry out their dishonest operations. For another category this provision was necessary insofar as there were worrying signals with enormous risks of disturbing public order due to the uncontrolled circulation of heavy weapons in the country.
