The announcement, by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) of Haiti, of the new calendar for the legislative and presidential elections implies the cancellation of the first round of the presidential elections of October 2015. This announcement and its consequences go against the conclusions of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) deployed following an invitation from the Haitian authorities in July 2015.
The Chief Observer of the EU EOM, MEP Ms. Valenciano, therefore considered that the conditions were no longer met for the continuation of her activities in Haiti.
This is why, after consulting the Chief Observer of the EU EOM, I decided to close this Mission.
The European Union remains determined to maintain its support for the development of Haiti and for the process of democratic renewal in accordance with the Constitution and in the interest of the Haitian people. I therefore call on the Haitian authorities and all political actors to show a sense of responsibility in the face of the country’s many urgent challenges.
