Danielle Allen Endorses Tanisha M. Sullivan for Secretary of State

Boston – February 22, 2022 – On Tuesday, Tanisha Sullivan, candidate for Massachusetts Secretary of State, announced that she has received the endorsement of former Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate and national democracy advocate Danielle Allen.

Allen, who made the announcement as her first official endorsement of 2022, said Sullivan’s commitment to expand voice, choice, and participation and promote transparency and accountability closely aligns with her own efforts, and will restore teeth to the Secretary of State’s core mission: safeguarding our democracy.

“Right now, our democracy is in dire straits. All of us feel it. And we need leaders who will meet this moment with the urgency it demands, and build both a stronger, more inclusive democracy, and a government that can earn, and deserve, people’s trust,” said Allen. “Tanisha Sullivan is the person to lead that effort in the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office. As an attorney and a civil rights leader, Tanisha has built a powerful track record of working across divides of all kinds to advance racial justice, voting rights, economic opportunity, and more. She and I share a deep sense of urgency, a belief in leading with community, and a vision to make Massachusetts a national model for strong, inclusive democracy.”

Sullivan, who launched her campaign in January, has focused on the critical role the Secretary of State’s office can – and should – play in not only advancing voting rights in Massachusetts, but making the Commonwealth a national leader in the fight to access the ballot and strengthen our democracy. She has also highlighted the untapped potential of the Secretary of State’s office in the fight to tackle economic inequality, including the development of more affordable housing and greater support to small businesses across the state.

“I’m deeply grateful to have Danielle’s support in this campaign,” said Sullivan. “In her work as a nationally recognized thought leader on democracy, nonprofit leader, and gubernatorial candidate, Danielle has consistently been a clear and principled voice on some of the most intractable challenges facing our communities. In this moment, when so much is on the line for our democracy, for our communities, and the need for leadership has never been more urgent, I’m honored to have Danielle as a partner in the work of building a stronger, more vibrant, and more expansive democracy for everyone in Massachusetts.”

Raised in Brockton and with deep family roots in Boston, Sullivan graduated from the University of Virginia before receiving graduate degrees in both law and business from Boston College. She has spent the majority of her legal career representing life sciences companies and has focused her volunteer service and pro bono work on expanding opportunity and improving the wellbeing of workers, small business owners, and communities across Massachusetts. While working full time as an attorney, in 2017 Sullivan took on the volunteer role of President of the Boston Branch of the NAACP, the first chartered branch of the NAACP in the country. During her tenure, the NAACP Boston Branch has been deeply involved in critical efforts to advance racial, economic, and social justice in Boston and across the Commonwealth.
