Cardinal Arlindo Gomes Furtado to Commemorate the Decennial to 500 Years of Catholic Church in Africa During Visit to America

Brockton, MA – [March 7, 2024] – PRESS RELEASE  – Cardinal Arlindo Gomes Furtado, the esteemed Bishop of Santiago Cabo Verde, is set to embark on a historic journey to America as part of the Decennial of the 500 years of the Catholic Church in Africa. The Diocese of Santiago, marking its monumental 500th anniversary in 2033, holds a significant place in history as the first diocese in Africa.

Cardinal Furtado’s visit is poised to be a momentous occasion, celebrating centuries of faith, tradition, and the enduring spirit of the Catholic Church in Africa. His presence in America underscores the global reach and unity of the Church, as well as the profound significance of this milestone anniversary.

The Cardinal’s itinerary includes a series of events aimed at commemorating and reflecting on the rich history and cultural heritage of the Church in Africa. On Friday, the 7th of March, Cardinal Furtado will arrive in Boston, where he will be warmly welcomed by local clergy and dignitaries.

One of the highlights of his visit will be the Gala Dinner scheduled for Saturday, March 9th, in Brockton. This special evening will bring together community leaders, parishioners, and supporters to honor the legacy of the Church in Africa and celebrate its enduring contributions to faith and society.

Additionally, Cardinal Furtado will preside over a solemn Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston on Sunday at 2PM. This sacred liturgy will serve as a moment of prayer, reflection, and unity, bringing together believers from across diverse backgrounds to commemorate this significant milestone in the history of the Church.
