BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS APPOINTS MAGALY SANCHEZ AS CHIEF FAMILY ADVANCEMENT OFFICER

BOSTON – Thursday, August 31, 2023 – Boston Public Schools (BPS) Superintendent Mary Skipper has appointed Magaly Sanchez as the Chief Family Advancement Officer. With a remarkable career spanning over two decades, Sanchez brings a wealth of leadership experiences from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She is known for her unwavering commitment to equity, inclusivity, and the success of all students, particularly those who have been historically marginalized.

“Magaly’s dedication to educational equity and her track record of fostering meaningful relationships with students, families, and communities make her the perfect fit for the Chief of Family Advancement role,” said Skipper. “Her fluency in English and Spanish will be key to our effort to connect with the community, and her expertise will be invaluable in changing our District from a model of family involvement to family engagement.”

A graduate of Providence College and the University of Rhode Island, Sanchez embarked on her educational leadership journey with a clear vision of bridging gaps, nurturing student-family-community relationships, and creating an environment conducive to the flourishing of every student.

In her most recent role as New Bedford Public Schools Curriculum Data and Assessment Manager, Sanchez was instrumental in developing sustainable systems that promoted equitable access and student success within programmatic pathways. Her efforts led to the approval of DESE’s Early College Program and the authorization of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB-DP) at New Bedford High School. This achievement positioned the school as one of two urban high schools in the South Coast with IB designation, out of 943 IB Diploma Programs offered in the United States.

Sanchez’s extensive background includes serving as Chief of Family and Community Engagement, Director of Student Registration and Assignment, Director of Implementation, and founding principal of Evolutions High School in Providence. As a principal, she played a pivotal role in shaping the school’s climate, culture, and personalized, mastery-based curriculum.

Sanchez’s educational philosophy is deeply rooted in community engagement and a thorough understanding of students’ and families’ needs. As Chief Family Advancement Officer, she will oversee multiple departments and provide strategic leadership in the development of comprehensive and proactive district and school family engagement strategies. Her primary focus will be on enhancing academic outcomes for all students through authentic family partnerships.

“Magaly’s extensive experience in various leadership positions within education underscores her deep understanding of the essential connections needed between schools and families to positively impact student outcomes,” said Boston Public Schools Deputy Superintendent of Equity, Community, and Family Advancement Dr. Ana Tavares. “Her approach is rooted in empathy and collaboration, which aligns seamlessly with our mission to cultivate genuine partnerships with families to enhance student achievement.”

Sanchez’s appointment as Chief Family Advancement Officer reaffirms Boston Public Schools’ commitment to fostering a collaborative environment
